Alan's story...

I came to Bath in 2007 at a very low point in my life, following the breakdown of a very stormy relationship. I stayed at Julian House for seven months. Though grateful for a roof over my head and food in my belly, the situation was far from ideal. Although this isn’t an excuse, I was around a lot of people who drank constantly, and I felt like there was nothing else to do. I began to drink heavily, even after being housed by Bath City Church. Eventually it became apparent that I had a very serious problem.

Following the help and advice of friends and a member of Lifeline, I went into a Christian Detox Centre on August 21st 2008. I was there for three months. After that, there followed a brief period back on the streets before moving into the DHI dry house, Barton Buildings. Then I started to really get my life back on track. I joined various DHI groups and started taking counselling. I’ve moved on a great deal since then and am hoping to move into a new home within a couple of months. With the help of DHI, I am taking a computer course and exams to keep me in touch with my profession (and, more importantly, keep me employable!). I also volunteer for the Genesis Project, which I find very rewarding.
