Reach Out: Celebrating 10 Years

Reach Out: Celebrating 10 Years

Developing Health & Independence (DHI) is celebrating ten years of Reach Out, a conference for the families and carers of those who misuse drugs and alcohol. The FREE event will be held at Somerdale Pavilion, Keynsham, on 15th June, 1-5.15pm.

It is estimated that for every person grappling with drug and alcohol misuse, there are at least five other people who are affected – husbands, wives and partners, mothers, fathers, siblings, children, grandchildren, friends.

Rosie Phillips, Chief Executive of DHI, said: “It is impossible to underestimate the effect of addiction on families and carers of those misusing. Many suffer anxiety, depression and poor health because of the stresses and strains in their lives. Too often they suffer in silence. The conference brings them together, to break the stigma and to offer support.”

Irene MacDonald, whose son died of a heroin overdose, said about Reach Out: “...One [drug treatment] organisation who has always made families a high priority is DHI with their annual Reach Out event and despite all the cutbacks and changes in services, continue to do so... it’s been a life changer for me”

The event is sponsored by Epoch Wealth Management, and will feature:

• Personal stories from family members
• A short film about the services that DHI provide for families and carers
• An exhibition of other services for families and carers
• A keynote speech from Vivienne Evans, Chief Executive of Adfam
• Free lunch and refreshments
