Swindon wheelchair user prepares for 20-mile charity challenge

A Swindon wheelchair user is training hard for a 20-mile sponsored challenge to raise money for a local charity which helps socially isolated people.

Paul Hill will wheel himself around Swindon on 22 July in aid of Developing Health and Independence (DHI) to raise money so that the charity can make improvements to its local centre.

Mr Hill has promises of £300 in sponsorship from 60 friends, family and local businesses, and hopes to bring the total to £1,000 before the event. Anyone who wants to sponsor Mr Hill should call DHI on 01793 617177.

Mr Hill, aged 28, who has used a wheelchair for 11 years, has been training for several months for the event, and aims to complete the circuit in around five hours. He will start at Guildford Avenue and use the cycle tracks round the town before finishing at DHI's centre in Maxwell Street.

Mr Hill, who has two daughters, has carried out voluntary work as a care worker and has helped people with learning difficulties.

"I'm really looking forward to the event and have been training hard for it," he said. "The money raised will go towards DHI's vital work."

DHI will use the money to make improvements to its centre, including upgrading its kitchen, which is used by its clients.
