DHI volunteer profile - Zoe
Zoe is a volunteer who wanted to meet new people.
“As a mother of young children, I started to miss spending time with adults," she said.
"I have a few hours during the day now my youngest is at pre-school, and helping at the drop-in has given me something really rewarding to do during the day. I meet so many interesting people at DHI and at the end of my shift I feel I’ve achieved so much.
"From a personal point of view, a family member had substance use problems in the past and I couldn’t help them. Subconsciously I think my initial motivation was that I really just wanted to rescue people, but as I learnt more about the philosophy of DHI through my training and induction, I saw that this approach dis-empowers people.
"What I love most about DHI is we do exactly what our name says – we develop the health and independence of the community.”
