Alastair's Story

Alastair's Story

Alastair was found by police, threatening to jump off a bridge. Fleeing gang violence in his home city and in fear for his life, he found himself sleeping a friend’s car. Admitted to hospital with an overdose and suicidal intentions, Alastair was helped by DHI’s Homeless in Hospital team to ensure he was not discharged with nowhere to live.

To achieve this, DHI liaised with several other teams locally and in his home city. Medical records were needed to apply for a homeless application here, referrals to both police forces were needed to obtain a crime reference and provide evidence that he was at risk to his life if he returned home. With all this, his homeless application was completed and accepted. At the same time, liaison with NHS and social care teams ensured he received help with his mental health.

Alastair was referred to Housing Options who found him temporary accommodation, which he accepted and which he hopes will help him find a new start in life.
