No matter that this was the 18th annual Reach Out conference, there is always a moment when we have to do a lot of blinking to hold back tears. The loneliness, grief, and quiet endurance experienced by those who have cared or care for someone with a drug or alcohol problem are immense.
Every year, we're reminded how deep those emotions run—and how long many carry them without support. But I’m also reminded of something just as powerful: the warmth, kindness, and human connection that fill the room when people come together to share, listen, and support one another. We all need that connection.
Gabor Maté often speaks of the role of connection in healing addiction—and at Reach Out, it’s clear this applies to carers and families just as much. This year, like every year, Reach Out created space for compassion, hope, and real conversations.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it possible. Especially to:
South Gloucestershire Council – for your long-standing support and sponsorship
Marlin Communications – for your generosity and backing
Una Gordon, Caitlin Murphy, and Helen Roe – our incredible family workers whose dedication and warmth create safety and trust for so many.
You reminded us again: healing happens in connection. And no one should have to do this alone.
