“Supporting clients to achieve their goals feels amazing”

Jackie Lavelot, Employment Specialist in our IPS service

Warren McKenzie and Jackie Lavelot are Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Employment Specialists working across Warmley, Yate and Coniston in South Gloucestershire. They share insights into the service they provide.

“Individual Placement Support is different from the help you'd get from a traditional work coach because it’s genuinely tailored to our clients,” says Warren.

“Often, clients are surprised – we don’t push them to apply for just any job. Instead, we sit down with them and explore their aspirations, making sure the opportunities are truly aligned with what they want to do in life,” he adds.

“One client said to me: ‘You’re different to what I expected – you’re asking about me.’”

Jackie recalls a client who wanted a driving role. “Her background was in finance, but she was determined to change direction. I worked with her, and she’s now thriving in her role as a delivery driver.”

Some of the routes available to job seekers include SWAP (Sector-Based Work Academy Programme), where clients are referred via the Job Centre. They train for three weeks in areas like admin, construction or retail, with a guaranteed interview at the end. Work trials – short placements lasting two to three days – are also used to help build confidence and experience.

Voluntary roles are another valuable pathway. “Some of our clients have been out of work for a while, so volunteering helps rebuild self-esteem, work history and references,” explains Warren.

The specialists also support clients with job searches, applications and identifying suitable vacancies.

But it’s not just about getting the job. Once placed, Warren and Jackie continue to support clients for the first three months.

“There’s a lot to think about when starting a new job,” says Warren. “We’re there to help clients through any teething troubles. We check in regularly to see how they’re doing and offer support if needed. Many clients find it reassuring to know someone has their back during those early days.”

One success story stands out for Warren. “A woman came to us with very low self-esteem. I told her we’d help her get back into employment, but she didn’t believe it was possible. She’s now delighted to have secured a retail position. She was anxious during those first three months, but we were there for her while she settled in.”

Jackie remembers a client who landed an engineering job within a month of receiving her support, which included rewriting his CV and cover letter. “He came in with a card and a box of chocolates to say thank you,” she says. “It feels amazing to know we helped him achieve his goals and move forward with his life.”
